چکیده

Expert systems technology arose initially from problems of diagnosis or pattern recognition but there have been fewer examples of successful synthesis systems. Constructive expert systems address such problems, particularly the problem of design. Two example expert system are presented, one of which (DOLMEN) supports the preliminary design of high rise buildings, and the other (JSD Advisor), which prescribes the design of a software system in a very narrow domain. DOLMEN uses a generate and test approach and incorporates an overall evaluation function which is used to limit the number of alternatives generated. The JSD system uses a generic domain model which is specialised during interactive dialogue with the user. The construction and features of the two systems are then analysed so as to identify the effect of domain characteristics on the type of expert system that can be built. It is argued that the critical dimensions are those of novelty, standardisation and monotonicity. The degree of novelty varies from highly creative to routine ; standardisation reflects the maturity of the design discipline and monotonicity determines the degree to which backtracking must be expected and supported. Whereas DOLMEN’s domain seems well suited to design support, effective expert systems in the field of software design will require standard object libraries and, even then, will concentrate on relatively mundane applications for the foreseeable future.

Inductive acquisition of expert knowledge

Expert systems divide neatly into two categories: those in which ( 1) the expert decisions result in changes to some external environment (control systems), and (2) the expert decisions merely seek to describe the environment (classification systems). Both the explanation of computer-based reasoning and the "bottleneck" (Feigenbaum, 1979) of knowledge acquisition are major issues in expert syst...

The Theorem Prover Satchmo

Satchmo is an automated theorem prover for rst-order predicate logic. Its reasoning paradigm, model generation, is more powerful than the traditional refutation paradigm. Satchmo can be seen as an inference engine for expert systems capable of handling not only constructive and deenite speciications, but also normative and indeenite ones. The implementation of Satchmo in Prolog is possible in a...

Advisory Systems to Support Decision Making

Both advisory systems and expert systems provide expertise to support decision making in a myriad of domains. Expert systems are used to solve problems in well defined, narrowly focused problem domains, whereas advisory systems are designed to support decision making in more unstructured situations which have no single correct answer. This paper provides an overview of advisory systems, which i...

Design of expert system prototype for analysing and structuring motivational strategies on ICT human resources to reduce employee turnover ratio

Chapter Abstract This chapter describes the related research done in the areas of expert systems. For the said purpose, we classified our literature review in three parts. The first part presents a literature review of the rule based expert systems. The Second part presents a literature review of the expert systems based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Such expert systems are known as hybri...

Financial Expert Systems

Financial decision-making problems represent an important new set of applications for expert systems. While these problems share certain similarities with the scientific and engineering domains that have historically been the focus of expert system research and development, they have their own special characteristics. What distinguishes financial applications? What demands do they place on expe...
